Periodontal Treatment
Got bad breath? Bleeding gums? These symptoms might not seem life threatening to you, but periodontal disease (gum disease), also called gingivitis in the early stage, is no laughing matter. Gum infections can lead to tooth loss and bone deterioration, as well as increased risk for stroke, heart attack, and osteoporosis.
Some common causes of periodontal disease include:
- smoking and tobacco use
- genetics
- stress
- medications
- poor nutrition
Hardened plaque, called tartar or calculus, can irritate gums and cause periodontal disease. Dr. Hayslip and his team will assess your gums and design a periodontal treatment plan to keep you healthy. We may suggest scaling to remove hardened plaque; root planing to smooth rough surfaces on teeth roots, where plaque tends to build; and/or Arestin antibiotic therapy to combat bacteria and infection. Your periodontal therapy will be comfortable because we use Oraquix topical subgingival numbing agent, which requires to needles. We will even implement oral conscious sedation for these procedures, when necessary.
